The project proposes the transformation of an existing building, guided by a care-oriented approach to space—care for the built fabric, the landscape, and modes of inhabiting. Rather than opting for demolition as requested by the brief, the project preserves the existing structure and introduces strategic subtractions to restore permeability between the town center and the riverside landscape. The partial removal of the ground floor slab creates new public pathways and visual connections across the site. Materials from the deconstruction are reused in pavements and interior flooring, proposing an uninterrupted landscape going through the building. At the heart of the project is a typological reflection on domestic space as a framework historically shaped by Modernity as a site for the perpetuation of inequalities. In this proposal, existing modernist typologies are called into question and reimagined through radical reorganization. Each dwelling is structured around a non-programmed central room—a “room in addition”—that allows the space to adapt to its inhabitants, rather than the other way around. This extra room, along with reconfigurable partitions, aims to enable residents to accommodate life changes without the need to relocate. The kitchen is conceived not merely as a service space, but as a room in its own right—a visible site of daily activity and care, reinforcing its social and relational role. The dry rooms are distributed equally around the central room, eliminating the need for a hierarchical corridor. The project thus ties the transformation of the built environment to the capacity of housing to support diverse subjectivities and evolving forms of life. The project was awarded 1st prize in the SIA 142 Competition, launched by the Fondation HBM Jean Dutoit.
